In Hyderabad, amidst controversy surrounding the Tirupati laddu's alleged adulteration, craftsmen at the Tirumala foothills are preparing to seek a geographical indication tag for their intricate wooden artistry. For over a century, these artisans have crafted detailed wooden sculptures of Lord Balaji and other deities, known as Madhavamala wood carvings. These sculptures include lifelike idols of gods and goddesses, decorative dolls, toys, house fixtures, religious altars, and furniture. The Sri Balaji Wood Carvings Mutually Aided Cooperative Society Limited, representing 510 artisans from 309 families, will submit the GI application, with NABARD assisting in the process. This application marks the 20th GI filing in Andhra Pradesh, led by GI practitioner Subhajit Saha alongside NABARD to help the artisans secure the tag.
